Mountain Biking - Lap Of The Loch (circuit Of Loch Ness)

Route: The Lap of the Loch is exactly as it sounds - a cicuit of Scotland's most famous body of water.  There are estimated to be 31,460 freshwater lochs in Scotland (really there are)!  Loch Ness is most certainly the king of them all, even if you don't happen to see the loch's most famous resident.  Nessie was first brought to the world's attention in 1933 and ever since has been doing visitors the service of attacting to shores of this scenic loch where they are guaranteed to see a beautiful loch, stunning hills and the odd tacky monster themed gift!  Our route heads down the Great Glen Way from Inverness and at Fort Augustus turns around to head up the more peaceful eastern shore of the loch.

Day 1: Inverness - Fort Augustus (33 miles)

Day one of this three day trip leaves Inverness following the Great Glen Way This is an external link..  The route passes the tourist honey pots of Urquhart Castle This is an external link. and Drumnadrochit and its museum dedicated to the famous, but strangely elusive Loch Ness Monster.  The terrain is best suited to a mountain bike and 33 miles on paths and tracks can make for a fairly long day.  Stunning scenery and a couple of Scotland's most famous sights make it a day to remember.

Day 2: Fort Augustus - Inverness (34 miles)

Heading back north the route leaves the Great Glen Way This is an external link. and joins the quiet roads that follow the east side of the Loch.  It seems that 95% of the tourists stick to the other side of the loch and you will wonder why.  One or two hills to negotiate and some great views of the loch.  Statistically you have a better chance of seeing the monster from this side of the loch, but then again you know what they say about statistics!  It's a great trip around one of Scotand's true icons.
