Self Led Short Breaks - Pitlochry - Callander: The Heart Of Scotland

Route: This is a reasonably gentle tour taking in what might jut be the finest stretch of Britain's National Cycle Network.  The route follows the central section of the Sustrans 'Lochs & Glens' route, passing Loch Tay, Loch Earn and Loch Lubnaig as you cycle from Pitlochry in Highland Perthshire to Callander in the Trossachs National Park

Duration: 3 days cycling, 2-4 nights

Total Cycling Distance: 67 miles (Average cycling distance is 22.5 miles per day.)

Departures: 2010 tours can begin every Monday from April to October (optional arrival Sunday, start cycling Monday).

Price: From £140 per person sharing a double room.  This is a base price which includes 2 nights accommodation and supply of the route in both hard copy and digital form.  Optional services include accommodation on arrival night, accommodation on the final day, bike hire, supply of GPS unit and luggage transfer.

Arrival Day:

Day 1: Pitlochry - Fortingall (23 miles)

You immediately join up with the National Cycle Network as the route starts with climb out of Pitlochry joining the River Tay at Logierait.  Travelling up the river you will pass the larger village of Aberfeldy which makes a natural lunch stop-over - the Watermill Cafe This is an external link.is our favourite spot.  If your interest is taken by whisky rather than coffee you can visit the Dewar's This is an external link. distillery with just a short deviation.  Beyond Aberfeldy the route passes the door of the magnificent Castle Menzies This is an external link. before arriving in the beautiful setting of Fortingall.

Day 2: Fortingall - Killin (18 miles)

Much of the day is again spent following the National Cycle Route. After leaving the village of Kenmore you will pass the five-star visitor attraction at the Scottish Crannog Centre This is an external link.before the route skirts alongside Loch Tay to reach Killin at the western end of the Loch.

Day 3: Killin - Callander (26 miles)

At Killin, you swap the minor road for one of Scotland's most scenic traffic-free cycle paths. The route passes through Glen Ogle to reach Lochearnhead and then Loch Earn itself.  After a short diversion to the village of Balqhuidder there is a pretty gentle end as you cycle along the shores of Loch Lubnaig on the traffic-free cyclepath to Callander.  It's gently downhill and arguable one of the best leisure cycling spots in Scotland.  The trip in the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park This is an external link. and it's a great spot to stop for an extra day or two walking or cycling.  You can find more details about Callander and The Trossachs here This is an external link..

Arrival & Departure

Arrival in Pitlochry: Pitlochry is served by rail services from Glasgow and Edinburgh (journey time of approximately 1 hour and 40 mins). If you are arriving by air, flying to Glasgow or Edinburgh is probably the best bet. If you arrive with your own transport we can help you arrange parking for the duration of your trip.

Departure from Callander: From Callander you will be required to take a bus to Stirling before catching a train back to Pitlochry or onwards to your final destination.  We take care of collecting and returning hire bikes.
